The Push Press is one of our favorites!
It’s POWERFUL. It’s SNAPPY. It’s something you should do!
Transfer Of Power
At its core, the push press teaches you how to transfer force from your lower body to your upper body. By using a quick dip and drive with the legs, you’re able to move more weight overhead than the strict press (shoulder press). That means more load, more power development, and more overall strength gains.
Explosiveness
But it’s not just about moving heavier weight. The push press builds explosiveness, which is critical for athletes and anyone looking to move better in daily life. Whether you’re jumping, sprinting, or just trying to feel more athletic, learning to generate force quickly is key—and the push press trains exactly that.
Shoulder stability
The push press also reinforces midline stability and shoulder strength. To finish the lift safely and efficiently, your core has to stay tight and your shoulders have to stabilize the load overhead. Over time, this leads to better posture, stronger lockouts, and more resilient shoulders.
Coaching Standpoint
From a coaching standpoint, the push press is a great bridge between strict strength and Olympic lifting. It introduces timing, rhythm, and bar path awareness without the complexity of a full lift like the jerk.
Simple, powerful, and incredibly effective—the push press isn’t just an accessory. It’s a cornerstone, fundamental movement for building strength, power, and athleticism.
Don’t forget to do your push presses!
